The mitre/meiter or Grenadiermütze was already in use by the Prussian Army in 1701. It was discontinued for a short time between 1810 and 1824 to be reintroduced again as a parade headdress for only the 1st Garde-Regiment zu Fuss. In 1894, a new and final design was created for the 25th anniversary of the day the emperor started his military carreer with the regiment. Originally worn by EM and dismounted officers, the mütze was also worn by mounted officers as from 1912.

The Grenadiermütze had a height of 11" (28cm) and had a white silver front plate fully decorated with trophies, an eagle and flags below a large royal crown. The 1st and 2nd Battalion of the regiment had the motto 'Semper Talis' above the eagle and had a red cloth body at the rear, while the 3rd Battalion (fusiliers) received the motto "Pro Gloria et Patria" and had a yellow cloth body. The FR letters below the eagle stand for Fredericus Rex

A pompom was worn on top of the hat which was white (centre)/red for the two grenadier battalions and black (centre)/yellow for the third fusilier battalion. As from 1912, musicians wore a red Pompom. It was white/black for NCOs and silvered metal for officers.

Officer had a better quality cap with for example silvered metal lace instead of white cotton on the red or yellow cloth.
